Introduction : Appointed as a judge of the High Court of Gujarat from 17.6.1961.
Born in Bombay in 1918 in a family of lawyers. His father Shri R. R. Modi was an attorney of standing who practiced in the Bombay High Court. His paternal grandfather Shri Ratanlal was a partner in M/s Malvi Modi Ranchhoddas & Co. one of the leading firms of attorneys in Bombay. On his mother's side his maternal grandfather Shri Ratanlal Ranchhoddas, was a founder and senior editor of the Bombay Law Report, one of the most outstanding unofficial law reports in the country. Thus, had as it were, law in his blood.
He graduated in arts in 1938 and took his LL.B. Degree in 1940. His Lordship passed Advocates' (O.S.) Examination in 1942 and was enrolled on the original side of the Bombay High Court in 1943. His Lordship was extremely fortunate in having as his senior, the Hon'ble Mr. K. T. Desai, Chief Justice, one of the most brilliant and astute lawyers that the Bombay Bar has produced. With his industry and ability, His Lordship soon acquired considerable experience in drafting pleadings and a quick grasp of the intricacies of the case.
Unlike many others, His Lordship soon gathered good practice particularly in commercial litigation. With the inauguration of the Bombay City Civil Court in 1948, His Lordship was in much demand in those courts also. In 1957-58 because of the large and various practice in those courts, His Lordship was appointed as the Government Pleader of the City Civil Court. But soon after the appointment, His Lordship was compelled to relinquish the post by reason of his increasing commitments in the High Court.
He was also associated in the earlier years of his practice, with the Bombay Law Reporter in preparing notes of arguments in important cases. The reports of those years bear ample testimony to the useful work put in by His Lordship in that behalf.
He took over as Judge of the High Court of Gujarat on 17th June 1961.
