Born on 3rd August 1932. Hails from Tirunelveli and son of former District & Sessions Judge, Late Herbert Sundaram. Did schooling at Board High School, Udamatpet, Anderson High School, Kancheepuram and P. S. High School, Mylapore, Madras. Obtained his commerce degree from Loyela College, Madras. Took his Law degree from Law College, Madras. Enrolled as Advocate at the Madras High Court in 1955. Did his apprenticeship under Mr. ustice T. Ramaprasad Rao. Practised for some time in Coimbatore before coming to Madras and worked as Assistant to Special Public Prosecutor N. Krishnaswami Reddi. Before he was elevated to the Bench appeared on appellate and original sides of the High Court (both civil and criminal). Was appointed as Additional Judge, Madras High Court on 4th January 1978 and confirmed as permanent Judge on 25.1.1979.
He is known to be interested in Vedanta and takes keen interest in cultural activities.
Was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court on 15th June 1992.
