Introduction : Appointed as a judge of the High Court of Gujarat from 17.11.1969
Born on 12th December 1917 at Wankaner in Saurashtra. Mr. Mehta graduated from St. Xaviers' College, Bombay in Arts with Honours degree in Economics in 1939. He passed his LL.B. Examination in 1941 from Sir L.A. Shah Law College, Ahmedabad and got a distinction and Dara Shethna Jurisprudence prize. His Lordship started practice at Rajkot in Western India States Agency Courts and after the formation of the separate State of Saurashtra, joined Saurastra High Court Bar Association in 1947 and soon established himself as one of the leading advocates on civil and constitutional side.
His Lordship was appointed District & Sessions Judge in May 1954 and he worked in that capacity at Junagadh, Surendranagar, Palanpur and Nadiad. In 1963, His Lordship was appointed as a Judge of the City Civil Court, at Ahmedabad. During his career as a Judge, His Lordship tried several election petitions. He also worked as Railway Claims Commissioner while at Surendranagar.
In December, 1968, His Lordship joined as Judicial Member of the Income-tax Tribunal newly comprised in Ahmedabad which post he held till his elevation to the Bench in the High Court on 17th November 1969. For about 7 years as a Judge of the Gujarat High Court His Lordship with his vast experience of law and judicial system made great impression on the Members of the Bar. His Lordship was transferred as a Judge, Himachal Pradesh High Court at Simla and took over at Simla on 7th July 1976 and thereafter His Lordship was elevated as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court and retired on 12.12.1979.
