Born on 25.3.1932. Educated at V. S. Trivedi Tutorial High School, Gujarat College, Sir L. A. Shah Law College, Ahmedabad and Sarvajanik Law College, Surat. Enrolled as a District Pleader in the Bombay High Court on 15.6.1954. Enrolled as an Advocate of the Gujarat High Court on 21.2.1962. Practised on Civil and Criminal side. Appointed as Judge of the City Civil and Sessions Court, Ahmedabad on 30.3.1964. Appointed as Secretary to the Government of Gujarat, Legal Department from 5.6.1974 to 31.12.1975. Appointed Additional Judge, Gujarat High Court from 2.9.1976. Appointed permanent Judge from 28.12.1977. Appointed Judge of the Supreme Court on 14.12.1988. Appointed Chief Justice of India on 25.10.1994. Retired on 25.3.1997.
