Hon’ble Mrs Justice Sunita Agarwal was born on 30th April 1966. She graduated from Lucknow University in 1986 with degree in B.Sc, before obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Law from Awadh University in 1990.

Justice Agarwal enrolled as an Advocate with the U.P. Bar Association on 16th December 1990. As a lawyer, Justice Sunita Agarwal practised mainly in the Civil, Writ, Original and Commercial Jurisdictions at the Allahabad High Court. After a dedicated practice of 21 years, Justice Agarwal was elevated as Additional Judge of Allahabad High Court on 21st November 2011 and, thereafter, took oath as a Permanent Judge on 6th August 2013.

Justice Agarwal is a trained and certified Mediator and was part of the very first batch of Allahabad High Court that was trained in Mediation and Conciliation.

She was appointed as the Executive Chairperson of State Legal Services Authority, Uttar Pradesh in the month of April, 2023, on account of being the Senior-most judge of the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Agarwal has presided over Single and Division Benches in almost all jurisdictions, such as Civil and Criminal Appeals, Service, Land Acquisition, Intra-Court Appeal and Constitutional matters. She was also part of the Seven Judges Bench of Allahabad High Court which was constituted to deal with issues relating to Subordinate Courts and infrastructure of the High Court and Subordinate Courts.

As a Judge of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Sunita Agarwal was also a part of various administrative committees as a member since the year 2016 such as Internal Complaints Committee to inquire into sexual harassment at work place constituted under “The Sexual Harassment of Women at work place (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 and the Committee for matters relating to ‘Sensitization of Family Court Matters’. She later chaired the Internal Committees, Family Courts Committee and also other Committees such as Rules Committee; Committee for Monitoring & Expeditious disposal of Criminal cases pending in the High Court and District Courts; Committee for engagement of Law Clerk (Trainees); Committee for Appointment of Special Judicial Magistrates/Special Metropolitan Magistrates and Committee for Monitoring Magistrates’ Court in the State of Uttar Pradesh to reduce pendency and streamline work; Protocol Committee; Committee for managing and maintaining Guest Houses of High Court; Committee to monitor the projects relating to construction of residential accommodation for Hon’ble Judges, Officers of the Registry and the Godowns at Allahabad; PIL Cell at Allahabad and Lucknow Bench; Committee for Direct recruitment and departmental promotion of Class-III and Class-IV employees upto the grade of Review Officers in the High Court; Jail Reforms Committee; Committee to consider the matters with regard to intra-district transfer of jurisdictions within the State of Uttar Pradesh; Committee constituted to monitor the progress of matters of the High Court and the Courts subordinate to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad pending with the State Government and Committee for Designation of Senior Advocates.

After serving as a Judge in Allahabad High Court for 12 years, Justice Agarwal was appointed as the Chief Justice, Gujarat High Court, Ahmedabad on 23rd July 2023.
